Public bug reported: Today I used the ethernet port on my Thinkpad X60s for the first time in almost a year to take backups of my hard drive. The computer froze totally altogether three times. It seems that the cause for the freeze was that I transferred a large amount of data (several gigabytes) over it, and it got somewhere around 4 gigabytes before freezing. No kernel oops and nothing interesting in log files, the computer simply froze with the image still on the monitor. After waiting a minute it did not do anything, so I rebooted and tried again two times. Both times it just froze after transferring roughly about 4 gigs of data.
As the ethernet card on my laptop is a PCIe model, I next tried to rmmod the e1000 module from the kernel and modprobe the e1000e module. It did not work, so I downloaded the latest e1000e package (version 0.2.9.5) from http://e1000.sourceforge.net/ , compiled and modprobed the new e1000e module. Works like a charm, I've backed up so far about 25 gigabytes of data without a single freeze. I am using up-to-date Hardy with kernel 2.6.24-16-generic. uname -a: Linux tele 2.6.24-16-generic #1 SMP Thu Apr 10 13:23:42 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux lspci -vvnn: 02:00.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Intel Corporation 82573L Gigabit Ethernet Controller [8086:109a] Subsystem: Lenovo ThinkPad X60s [17aa:207e] Control: I/O+ Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR+ FastB2B- Status: Cap+ 66MHz- UDF- FastB2B- ParErr- DEVSEL=fast >TAbort- <TAbort- <MAbort- >SERR- <PERR- Latency: 0, Cache Line Size: 64 bytes Interrupt: pin A routed to IRQ 217 Region 0: Memory at ee000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=128K] Region 2: I/O ports at 2000 [size=32] Capabilities: [c8] Power Management version 2 Flags: PMEClk- DSI+ D1- D2- AuxCurrent=0mA PME(D0+,D1-,D2-,D3hot+,D3cold+) Status: D0 PME-Enable- DSel=0 DScale=1 PME- Capabilities: [d0] Message Signalled Interrupts: Mask- 64bit+ Queue=0/0 Enable+ Address: 00000000fee0300c Data: 416a Capabilities: [e0] Express Endpoint IRQ 0 Device: Supported: MaxPayload 256 bytes, PhantFunc 0, ExtTag- Device: Latency L0s <512ns, L1 <64us Device: AtnBtn- AtnInd- PwrInd- Device: Errors: Correctable- Non-Fatal- Fatal- Unsupported- Device: RlxdOrd+ ExtTag- PhantFunc- AuxPwr- NoSnoop+ Device: MaxPayload 128 bytes, MaxReadReq 512 bytes Link: Supported Speed 2.5Gb/s, Width x1, ASPM L0s L1, Port 0 Link: Latency L0s <128ns, L1 <64us Link: ASPM L1 Enabled RCB 64 bytes CommClk+ ExtSynch- Link: Speed 2.5Gb/s, Width x1 ** Affects: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Thinkpad X60s hangs when using ethernet port https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/224380 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
