Public bug reported:

Today I used the ethernet port on my Thinkpad X60s for the first time in
almost a year to take backups of my hard drive. The computer froze
totally altogether three times. It seems that the cause for the freeze
was that I transferred a large amount of data (several gigabytes) over
it, and it got somewhere around 4 gigabytes before freezing. No kernel
oops and nothing interesting in log files, the computer simply froze
with the image still on the monitor. After waiting a minute it did not
do anything, so I rebooted and tried again two times. Both times it just
froze after transferring roughly about 4 gigs of data.

As the ethernet card on my laptop is a PCIe model, I next tried to rmmod
the e1000 module from the kernel and modprobe the e1000e module. It did
not work, so I downloaded the latest e1000e package (version 0.2.9.5)
from http://e1000.sourceforge.net/ , compiled and modprobed the new
e1000e module. Works like a charm, I've backed up so far about 25
gigabytes of data without a single freeze.

I am using up-to-date Hardy with kernel 2.6.24-16-generic.
