I started to have this problem after upgrading to ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron). It happens only with USB devices under KDE. This, however, doesn't happen with eSATA (extenal SATA) drives...they get ejected. Also, I noticed that there's no "eject" option in the Gnome desktop...Therefore, it seems to be an annoyance only under KDE 3.5 (Kubuntu).
