Thank you, I will try installing 8.04 using a Live CD -- as soon as I find
enough time (busy work week right now).

The system will boot up if I keep the Live CD version 7.10 in the drive
and choose to boot from the hard drive by selecting F12 on start up. This
starts the upgraded 8.04 Ubuntu (that I downloaded over the Internet). It
appears that installing 7.10 again would be possible using the CD, but I
will make a new version 8.04 CD and try to re-install that version. In the
meantime, Dell is mailing me a diagnostic and trouble-shooting CD that
should have been included with the computer.

Thanks very much for your reply.
