Thank you, I will try installing 8.04 using a Live CD -- as soon as I find enough time (busy work week right now).
The system will boot up if I keep the Live CD version 7.10 in the drive and choose to boot from the hard drive by selecting F12 on start up. This starts the upgraded 8.04 Ubuntu (that I downloaded over the Internet). It appears that installing 7.10 again would be possible using the CD, but I will make a new version 8.04 CD and try to re-install that version. In the meantime, Dell is mailing me a diagnostic and trouble-shooting CD that should have been included with the computer. Thanks very much for your reply.
