I've had the same problem with KDM in Kubuntu Hardy. Ilogout, and then I get nothing but a black screen. I couldn't use Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to kill X, and the terminals were unresponsive. To make matters worse, there's no errors in the xorg log, so I can't help in that effect.
If it helps, the laptop is an eMachines M2352 with an ATi Raedon Mobility (unknown model) but doesn't use the restricted drivers.
