I should add, that the my previous comment refers to a machine with Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 900, with automatically configured X (no xorg.conf)
On my other machine (Clevo notebook with some Via UniChrome graphics card) I had to configure X manually with a previously written xorg.conf. On the manually configured X the videos play with correct aspect ratio. So I think there is some parameter set by the x.org automatism.
