Given the NMI messages I was getting at the console when the hang occurred, I tried booting with "nmi_watchdog=2". This seems to have stopped the crashed occurring for me. I've managed to scp several gigs of data over the LAN whereas before, the machine would hang after just a few hundred megs.
Unfortunately this conflicts with vboxdrv from virtualbox-ose :-( I'll continue testing & post any further results.
