To further pinpoint this is a Firefox 3.0b5 issue I downloaded Opera 9.5 beta 2 from http://www.opera.com/ filename is: opera_9.50b2-20080422.6-shared-qt_i386-en.deb
It's a night and day difference in the sites mentioned. It behaves around as fast as Firefox 3.0b5 does in Windows XP for me.
