Confirm that this problem still exists with Hardy. I just did a clean install on the same system mentioned previously. The system hangs up with a black scree after booting when using the proprietary fglrx drivers. I have to hit the reset button to reboot. The only way to get the system into a usable state is to boot into recovery mode, and edit XORG.CONF to use the "ati" or "vesa" driver.
