I can confirm the same issue. I am not using any flash-based storage, just a regular hdd.
I upgraded 7.10 x64 --> 8.04 x64 on my Macbook Pro 3,1. Upgrade appeared to go okay, and the machine starts, but login hangs. I can access tty. Without gdm, 8.04 is a no-go for me. I've reverted back to 7.10. Any idea when this will be fixed? I use ubuntu as my primary os so this is a big bummer.
