Ok having restarted to switch back to Nvidia driver, grab the logfile and restart X again, when back in vesa mode the top of the screen is corrupted with a black bar approx 2cm in thickness with flecks of Magenta through it, then also the screen is shifted approx 1/3 to the right, with the rightmost portion of the screen appearing on the left side now. On a full restart of the machine the issue is resolved, restarting X does not solve it.
