I'd like to reopen this but for Hardy. There actually is a "Rename..."
entry in the right-click menu for changing volume names but:

1- It is greyed-out in the right-click menu of a volume's icon in the
desktop.

2- It's active in the right-click menu in Places->Computer

(1 & 2 are actually quite contradictory.)

3- Trying to rename a volume via #2 causes an error dialog to show up
(see attached picture) which means nothing to me.

4- It doesn't matter if you use Nautilus as the user or with "gksu
nautilus" to gain privileges, the error is the same.

5- It doesn't matter if the volume is mounted or not; the error is still
the same.

6- Changing the volume label with e2label (on an ext3 partition) does
work only after a reboot. This is just a workaround and shouldn't be the
way to go for a non-experienced user.
