Public bug reported:

Upgrading from 7.10 to 8.04, using Update Manager.
First Attempt: completed steps 1 & 2 successfully (preparing to upgrade, 
setting new software channels)
completed about 80% of step 3 (getting new packages) before encountering this 
error:

"Error during update

"A problem occurred during the update. This is usually some sort of
network problem, please check your network connection and retry."

Found no problems with network connection. Tried again.

Subsequent Attempts: completed step 1 successfully
could not complete step two without encountering same error:

"Error during update

"A problem occurred during the update. This is usually some sort of
network problem, please check your network connection and retry."

Upgrading from 7.10 to 8.04, using Alternate CD.

First attempt: Chose to include latest updates from the internet

Successfully completed step 1 (preparing to upgrade)
Could not complete step 2 (setting new software channels) without encountering 
same error:

"Error during update

"A problem occurred during the update. This is usually some sort of
network problem, please check your network connection and retry."

Second Attempt: Chose not to include latest updates from the internet

Successfully completed step 1 (preparing to upgrade)
Could not complete step 2 (setting new software channels)

New error:

"Error authenticating some packages"

"It was not possible to authenticate some packages. This may be a
transient network problem. You may want to try again later. See below
for a list of unauthenticated packages."

On one other attempt: encountered an error like this: "Could not
calculate the upgrade"
