I suspect this problem could be related to one of these facts:
 * many partitions on disk: I use 8 partitions and highest device name used was 
/dev/sda11
 * there was several ext3 partitions, one ext2, one fat32, one swap and one 
reiserfs
 * there is freedos installed on /dev/sda1 and it may cause the problem

   and as a result of unhandled situation during scanning partitions may cause 
this problem.
Anyway, when I wiped that disc including freedos, created 4 new ext3 
partitions, the problem was gone.
