Problem solved. This happens when there are too many access points using the same channel in the same area. In my apartment building I was showing three different networks (other than mine) and they were all using channel 11. So as I got farther away from my AP I guess the other networks interfered with mine. So I changed my channel to 1 and now everything works perfectly.
