i think the recent upgrade changed the dependency of update-manager,
update-manager-core and update-notifier.
for me, i upgraded update-manager-core and it automatically removed
update-manager, ubuntu-desktop and update-notifier, so i dont have the notifier
now when i boot up or use apt-get update/upgrade etc.
this problem should be related with broken dependency.
