I reported this yesterday to kde bug tracker:
http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=161099

They told me to kick it back over here. This was not happening under
gutsy. I can confirm all the same symptoms as Aicardi. NVidia graphics
card with Compiz enabled. It does it on regular local tracks and
last.fm streams.

"Version: 1.4.9.1 (using KDE 3.5.9)
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages
OS: Linux

I just upgraded to Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron RC yesterday. Amarok
upgraded with it. Now while listening to tracks, the "Playing:" field
in the status bar does not update correctly. It continuously overwrites
itself but does not clear the field. Minimizing and restoring Amarok
will cause it to refresh. The result of the overwriting is a bunch of
garbled text overlayed upon itself.

I will attach a screenshot.

Screen shot showing Playing: getting overwritten after track changes

After additional testing, this seems to happen when amarok is running on
another viewport (desktop). If I have the app active and on current display,
it does update. This has happened while listening to last.fm stream, not sure
if it does it when listening to regular local tracks.

This is a problem with X and associated friends (think nvidia/fglrx), which
only seems to be exposed with Hardy. Perhaps you should report downstream to
Ubuntu.

Not much we can do about this really - so sorry! "
