Public bug reported:

On startup of a new hardy xubuntu install I went to "Hardware drivers"
to get my nvidia driver and the box was checked that it should be being
used, (odd because I had not installed any drivers yet...) but said it
was "Not in use" I tried unchecking and rechecking the box and then it
wanted to restart. After restart everything was the same in "Hardware
drivers". I found out I needed to enable some sources to get it to
work. It should tell you in "Hardware drivers" that you need more
sources to enable drivers rather then pretend to work.

** Affects: ubuntu
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
