Thanks for the additional feedback.
I agree with you that we should have a way to enable the version
information again. I will provide you with a update-manager build after
the release (sorry, I just don't have time before) in my PPA that
enables them again and then add a gconf key in the next ubuntu version.
I hope you are happy with this solution.
