several issue seem to be described there which make the work harder now. connecting to an user directory on a ubuntu samba server using security share works correctly once smbpasswd has been used to define the samba password for the corresponding user, not confirming the issue. could you describe exactly how you configure your server and what steps you use in GNOME? Did you try to use "gvfs-mount smb://smbname/share"? Do you have anything in the server logs? Does smbclient works correctly?
