Thank you for the logs. First, the kernel log shows that the kernel
itself crashes in the sound driver (in snd_pcm_timer_init). This could
cause all sorts of erratic user space behaviour, but it's hard to tell
if that's the reason why hal did not start up initially.

It seems that in your test run, hal did start correctly and stayed
running. Can you please try the following:

 - restart your computer, log in, open Terminal
 - Verify that "pidof hald" does not print out anything (i. e. hal is not 
running)
 - do "sudo /etc/init.d/hal start", and after that, check whether "pidof hald" 
prints out a number (hal is running then)
 - give me the output of "ls -l /etc/rc*/*hal*
