Is this still due to happen? If it's happened already, then it's not working correctly.
I have a synaptic touchpad, and the only way I was able to get it working is for me to edit my xorg file. Naturally, without an advanced degree in xorg.conf logic I've broken a number of other things. Once it is working I get an extra tab in system -> preferences -> mouse called Touchpad, which seems to indicate that my touchpad is now detected correctly.
