I've just discovered that alt+ctrl+f keys have become unbound somewhere in the last few days. That could explain why I can't switch to console. Haven't tried ctrl+alt+backspace yet.
Maybe xorg has changed. A couple of weeks ago I changed the xorg keyboard configuration while trying to get my MS Natural Elite keyboard with UK key layout to work. The British Pound symbol was not working, and still doesn't. Separate problem, not reported.
