I tried the following to see if it would work, nothing did.

Modified /etc/default/acpi-support to change:
SAVE_VBE_STATE=false
POST_VIDEO=false
SAVE_VIDEO_PCI_STATE=false
DOUBLE_CONSOLE_SWITCH=false

Tried 'standby':
ACPI_SLEEP_MODE=standby

Boot into rescue mode and continue normal boot to disable vesa frame
buffer.

echo mem > /sys/power/state directly both from X and after switching to
a console.

Tried:
SAVE_VIDEO_PCI_STATE=true
