I have a setup here on hardy (and one with gutsy at a place I administrate) with both pam-ldap and nss-ldap and a remote LDAP server, but we do not need nscd to have it working properly. (Actually I tried nscd but removed it because its caching brought more grief than benefit in our case).
Why do you need nscd? What happens at your place without it?
