I believe your bug may be related to this http://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/37 (at Pidgin's bug tracker) Unfortunately, it is targeted only for the 3.0 milestone...
Anyway, I'm just guessing... maybe it's better to talk to Pidgin's developers about it... I'm not sure... I saw this same problem once on my girlfriend's machine, but I didn't go further to check what was happening.
