Please disregard my previous message, I found what I was doing wrong. Just in case somebody runs into the same issue, the problem is that I was installing the new kernel without properly removing the previous one. I had to purge the openvz kernel packages, manually delete the corresponding directory in /lib/modules/, and only then install the kernel I compiled.
Now everything seems to be working properly. Thanks.
