The Fedora LiveCD makes my notebook mount the crypto-thumbdrive fine, too - using gvfs 0.2.0.1-1.fc9 and gnome-mount 0.8-svn20080225.4.fc9. Upgrading it to gvfs 0.2.3-1.fc9 and gnome-mount 0.8-svn20080225.5.fc9 works, too
So it looks like something broke on Hardy since 8.4.2008 - either in general or for both my machines.
