Sorry, I cannot be any more exact about how problem came about I have part-broken re-fixed the system trying to get sound to work (removed StudioUbuntu) and then dbus/hal problems. I also switch kernels as synaptic appears to install 64 bit versions for my old Pentium 4 with hyperthreading. If you do want any terminal outputs I will try to oblige.
