I have started experiencing a similar problem on my ACER TravelMate 4060.
Strange, because it started appearing only a week ago. Only booting with a
power adapter (and battery removed) helps.
Ubuntu 7.10 (up-to-date) freezes on startup with battery in place.
Sometimes the startup process reaches the blank desktop window with no menus or
icons or anything but a mouse pointer on it. And during that freeze even
holding a turn-off button pressed does not help to shut the laptop down.
