I installed Hardy 12th April daily DVD, I had no ISP so no internet connection. So could do no updates.
Computer would login, 5 seconds go black then logout. It would login to "GNOME failsafe" most of the time, but sometimes stop the rest of gnome loading after drawing the background. switching to console ctrl+alt+f1 would lock up the keyboard and screen. Power button still worked; controlled shutdown. I tried to make "GNOME failsafe" default with gdmsetup but I still need to select "GNOME failsafe" to login. I'm sorry not have more info.
