Looks like this is the same as a bug I just opened up. I will mark that as a
dup, and add my data here. Based on what Sveri wrote above, we both have the
same signature, namely, dmesg reports the following:
usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning

Seems like the waiting never stops...

Here is my data from the dup bug I created:

I've updated to 8.04 a few weeks back, and since then, I have not been
able to load pictures off of my USB digital camera. In 7.10, my camera
was detected as a USB mass storage device. I was able to browse pics,
loads them to the computer, and delete them from the camera. I always
used Dolphin (never used Digicam or any other photo management
software). As of 8.04, I can no longer do this. I've tried with Digicam,
Dolphin, and using gphoto2 command line app as well. None of these
worked. I believe the problem is related to a message I see when running
dmesg. The output (from the time I plug in the camera) follows:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ dmesg
[ 595.381206] usb 1-3: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 4
[ 595.716463] usb 1-3: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
[ 596.006279] usbcore: registered new interface driver libusual
[ 596.148191] Initializing USB Mass Storage driver...
[ 596.152028] scsi0 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
[ 596.155012] usbcore: registered new interface driver usb-storage
[ 596.155022] USB Mass Storage support registered.
[ 596.156801] usb-storage: device found at 4
[ 596.156808] usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning

No other message prints after that (until I unplug the camera from the
USB cord). No mater how long I wait (waited as many as 10 minutes), I
never get another message. When this worked on 7.10, the device would
"settle" and I could view as a USB mass storage device.

Note that the window does pop up saying a device has been detected, and gives
me three options (Digicam, Dolphin, or Do nothing). Dolphin trys to get the
contents of the camera, and then errors out with the following message:
"Could not read file Error writing to the port"
Digicam detects the camera, but also errors out saying it is unable to read
from the device.

The following is the output from lsusb:
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 413c:3010 Dell Computer Corp. Optical Wheel Mouse
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 07b4:0109 Olympus Optical Co., Ltd C-370Z/D-535Z/X-450
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 03f0:7404 Hewlett-Packard
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000

My camera is the Olympus.

When this worked as a USB mass storage device, the file /proc/scsi/scsi
had data in it, and I had an sd1 (or something like that) under /dev/

Now, the /proc/scsi/scsi file has nothing in it (it just says the following):
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo cat /proc/scsi/scsi
Attached devices:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$

Ive looked through the bug reports as well as the discussion groups and
tried all of the suggestions there with no luck. At this point, I am
guessing this is a bug that was introduced by installing 8.04.

I use the KDE desktop environment, and I am current with all updates as
of this morning at 8:00 AM.

Let me know if there is any other info I can provide, or any tests I can
perform.
Thanks
