I have an ATI Radeon 1950x and I have the same problem. I get a black screen when I try to use fglrx; I can only get to the login window when I substitute vesa for fglrx. Also, the keyboard is non responsive, but the actual system is running. Just black screen + non responsive keyboard everytime I use the fglrx provided by ATI or Ubuntu.
