Public bug reported:

The biggest issue I had with Ubuntu 8.04 is video and video card related things.
Tested on all x64 "desktop" versions: Ubuntu 8.04 beta, Kubuntu 8.04 beta,
Kbuntu 8.04 beta KDE4, as well as all "nightly" CDs with these OSes dated Apr
10 with same result.

My configuration:
ATI x1300 (R500-based) card on PCI-E bus, my motherboard is MSI K9N Platinum
(NVidia NForce 570 Ultra chip set).
Monitor attached over DVI link, model Acer AL1722.

Side note:
Right now all this hardware works pretty fine with Kubuntu 7.10 x64, both when
booting from CD and when installed on HDD with ATI's proprietary
driver.Restricted drivers manager detects this card and properly installs
driver.
 Now back to Ubuntu 8.04...

My actions:
Boot from CD into live Ubuntu 8.04 beta (or Kubuntu or Kubuntu KDE4) session.

What happens:
Generally, system boots up fine. I can see text-mode console if I want to and
Alt-F1...F6 were pressed during boot.
However, when graphical desktop appears, I'm no longer able to switch to
text-mode console.
When I'm pressing ctrl-alt-Fn (for example ctrl-alt-F1) to go to text-mode
console, switching to console occurs but nothing appears on screen.
After several seconds display turns off to standby mode. This means that upon
switching to text mode there is either no signal from video card or it is out
of range.Driver does something weird on video mode switching and this only
happens after X server has been started.

Technically, Ubuntu 8.04 selects ATI Radeon fbdev driver which is not
seems to handle my video card too nice.Ubuntu 7.10 never uses this
driver and falls back to VESA driver until proprietary driver is
installed.

Furthermore, if I'm launching Restricted Drivers Manager on Ubuntu 8.04
beta, it reports that there is no hardware which needs proprietary
drivers. This definitely (and unfortunately) not seems to be true since
it looks like Radeon fbdev driver lacks 3D acceleration support and
(what worse) fails to operate correctly with my video card.

lshw output related to video card is following (taken from Kubuntu 7.10 x64
with proprietary ATI driver installed):
