................................................................................................ This was a fresh install onto a second hard drive on a reasonably well-spec'd machine. The drive had previously been used for an earlier version of Kubuntu, the other drive included M/s XP. The original installation seemed to proceed without a hitch but seized when a large volume of files (73 ?) was requested by the automated update. The download stopped about half-way through with a message to the effect that to contnue would have caused problems. Repeating the attempt to update update the installation achieved the same result. The main log from var/log/dist-upgrade reads as follows: 2008-03-01 14:34:51,214 INFO release-upgrader version '0.81' started 2008-03-01 14:34:51,806 DEBUG lsb-release: 'gutsy' 2008-03-01 14:34:51,806 DEBUG _pythonSymlinkCheck run 2008-03-01 14:34:52,714 ERROR Cache can not be locked (E:dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem. ) Hope this helps. I am quite happy to run any tests/processes you might find useful - this installation is not critical - I keep another machine for my main work.
