`firefox -safe-mode` also exhibits the problem.

Problem still exists with desktop effects set to none.
To reproduce, open Firefox 3.0b4 or b5. Find a web form with a check box
or radio button. Click to check the box or select the radio button.
"Selection" box will appear around the item (the one that moves if you
tab between elements on the website), but the button/check box itself
will appear as a blank box the color of the background in Firefox.
Clicking on a neutral area of background in Firefox (thus unselecting
the check box or radio button) will show that it is checked or selected,
but is blanked out while selected.
