Binary package hint: network-manager

I have no applet, and I when I start nm-applet from the command line,
nothing happens.

On investigation, NetworkManager is not running. When I try to start it
manually, I get an error:

$ sudo NetworkManager --no-daemon
NetworkManager: <info>  starting...

OS is Hardy 8.04, updated about an hour ago.

network-manager package version is 0.6.6-0ubuntu5

Wireless card is ipw3945.
