Same here, I simply see:

Setting up hal (0.5.11~rc2-1ubuntu6) ...
 * Reloading system message bus config...
   ...done.
 * Starting Hardware abstraction layer hald

and it just sits there :( -- 2 hours so far.

The only thing in /var/log/debug other than the kernel boot messages is:
