I have the same error, my /dev/sdb{1,3,5} partitions are not recognized.
I have a feisty system in that disk (I boot hardy from sda1, but need
sdb1 where all my music, videos, etc are stored), I found a temporary
fix:

sudo hdparm -z /dev/sdb

This will force a kernel re-read of the partition table of the specified
device.

This bug started to happen when /dev/hd?? files were changed to
/dev/sd?? files although I use IDE hard disks.

udev version is: 117-4ubuntu2
