Public bug reported:

All I did was add a third SATA hard drive. Bios recognized the drive.
I have Windows Vista 32 on my first SATA hard drive, while Ubuntu is
installed on my second SATA. To be sure I first booted Windows Vista
through GRUB. Vista had no problem starting. It immediately recognized
the third SATA drive and installed it in a few seconds. I was able to
see my old files on it.

I then restarted and this time let GRUB boot Ubuntu 8.04 beta. I have
had this now for a while. Ubuntu started and led me to the login window
followed by the password. However, after I enter the password, Ubuntu
freezes and fails to go any further. All I see is the orange/brown
screen.

I was actually going to add another SATA drive but since this problem I
have stopped. I do not know if this is a bug or a install program
problem? Why would Ubuntu not recognize new hard drives and
automatically install them, as Vista did?

NOTE: Prior to the addition of this third hard drive Ubuntu was working
fine off my second SATA.

Other info:
AMD dual core Opeteron 64 processor, 2 Meg RAM, ASUS A-8N-SLI Deluxe Mother
board, socket 939
