Further investigation reveals that the person sending the files to me somehow managed to send me 5 copies of the same doc file. The pdf turned out to also be a word doc file. So the bug is a red-herring.
If anything out of this could be called as a bug, it would be that evince was willing to process the file as a pdf purely on the strength of the .pdf filename extension. I had assumed that evince would perform some form of basic file header or format verification.
