I experience the same behavior when using vinagre "against" two different linux host, both running ubuntu gutsy. It is also important to note that given a significant number of retries the connection will eventually succeed. Using ii vinagre 0.5.0-1 VNC client for the GNOME Desktop on ubuntu hardy.
