I see the black images also in various sites, if I copy the url of the image to its own tab and press <shift> "reload button" continuously, the the previous black image is shown, but sometimes firefox prints out: "image ..... can not be displayed because it contains errors" maybee this helps
I also don't think that changing the xorg.conf configuration file is a good solution. We deploy ubuntu on 100 of stations and can not check every one of them. For the average user it is a bummer to have a firefox which does not display all images which used to be properly displayed for many years.
