I can't reproduce this using the latest hardy package:

$ apt-cache policy git-core
git-core:
  Installed: 1:1.5.4.3-1ubuntu1
  Candidate: 1:1.5.4.3-1ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 1:1.5.4.3-1ubuntu1 0
        500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com hardy/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

$ touch 'a\b'
$ ls -latr
total 12
drwxrwxrwt 21 root root 4096 2008-04-06 20:43 ../
drwx------  7 ubuntu  ubuntu  4096 2008-04-06 20:44 .git/
-rw-------  1 ubuntu  ubuntu     0 2008-04-06 20:45 a\b
drwx------  3 ubuntu  ubuntu  4096 2008-04-06 20:45 ./
$ git clean -f
Removing a\b
$ ls -latr
total 12
drwxrwxrwt 21 root root 4096 2008-04-06 20:43 ../
drwx------  7 ubuntu  ubuntu  4096 2008-04-06 20:44 .git/
drwx------  3 ubuntu  ubuntu  4096 2008-04-06 20:45 ./
