This problem also exists on my 17" CRT (1280x1024) with nVidia 7600GS.
(worked perfect under Gutsy)

Upon development upgrade from Gutsy the only resolution was 800x600,
indicating that xorg was running in low-res mode. Install of restricted
nVidia driver did not correct the problem, and on reboot asked again to
install the driver. This happened 8 times before I gave up. I looked at
xorg.conf and nothing looked unusual.

Upon clean install of Hardy Beta (on April 5th) max resolution was less
than max but acceptable (11xx by 9xx). This resolution has since
disappeared and the current max is 1024x768.

Hardy Heron Beta: Problem with video resolution. The video card (VIA VN896) was
not automatically detected. The screen (desktop) exceeds the margins of the LCD
monitor, cutting the screen.
