Not quite sure if it's the same issue as I believe this issue was related to ALSA bug
https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/view.php?id=3746 Which says that a null pointer message appears in dmesg when trying to play via HDMI. I don't get a null pointer message is dmesg, I just hear no audio.
