I just realized that this _might_ be relevant: I've made my
/etc/resolv.conf file unwritable by doing "chattr +i
/etc/resolv.conf". (I did this to avoid an unrelated problem: my DHCP
server is sorta on drugs, and always tells my Ubuntu machine to use a
bogus DNS server ... it's a long story ...)

I just now tried making it writable again, thinking that perhaps
network-manager was endlessly trying to modify that file ... but it
had no effect. (So I've restore the unwritable-ness.)
