FYI, I've been using Awn for about a year now on a multi-user machine (ATI 9250SE, xorg drivers), and fast user switching has not (in my memory) made Awn disappear. Of course, I'm not using Compiz (xfwm4 here), XGL (AIGLX here), or Ubuntu (Gentoo here) and the second account did not have compositing turned on (until today).
