I think what's happening for me is that the server is timing out, and
dropping the connection. But Nautilus isn't realising that the
connection is dead, and when I try to do something, like open a folder,
it's taking a long time before giving this error. I haven't confirmed
that I'm right about this guess: I stopped trying to use Nautilus to do
this and switched to gftp which could reliably maintain the connection.

In my original title I wrote '(and other protocols)'. I was wrong about
that: it was a separate problem and turned out to be configuration
problem on a server running smb. Nautilus couldn't make a connection.
Neither, it turned out, could anything else. But Nautilus was able to
reliable connect through smb to another well-configured server.
