** Description changed:

  Power off did work by 6.06 LiveCD. With 8.04-beta it is different: After
  I remove the CD and press enter, (at least) a hard disk powers off, but
  the screen remains the same and fans keep spinning. Keyboard does not
  respond then.

  Hardware is relatively old, Compaq Deskpro using Intel Pentium III.
  When I start linux from the LiveCD, I get the following kind of message:
  "[   0.000000] ACPI: BIOS age (1999) fails cutoff (2000), acpi=force is
  required to enable ACPI"

  I'll report the logs according to instructions here:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.22/+bug/119308/comments/50
+
+ I used the following command to create the log files in /tmp:
+ cd /tmp && sudo dmidecode > dmicode.log && uname -a > uname-a.log && cat
/proc/version_signature > version.log && dmesg > dmesg.log && sudo lspci -vvnn
> lspci-vvnn.log

** Attachment added: "dmesg.log"
