Public bug reported:

When external storage is plugged in at shutdown, the mount point folder
remains in /media, causing several new mount points to be created.
After a few reboots, /media contains something like

diskname
diskname_
diskname__
diskname___
diskname____
etc.

To the best of my knowledge, this started a few days ago with an update.

A temporary solution is to unmount the drive and delete these folders
before shutdown.
